Choosing Your Wedding Ring

If you appreciate symbolism and meaning, you may like to consider a Celtic-style wedding ring. Many elaborate styles follow traditional Celtic designs (as well as non-traditional designs) to express particular qualities, for example unity, love, desire or strength. Interestingly, many jewelry makers have noticed a big rise in demand for rings with meaningful symbolism since the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Understandably, everybody wants something different. If you really can’t find the perfect wedding ring already made, you can have one custom designed.

Each option has different advantages. Buying an already made ring in a shop gives you absolute certainty that what you are getting is precisely what you want. In a store, you can also more easily match up various engagement ring and wedding band combinations to help with your choice.

On the other hand, commissioning a custom-made ring gives you control over your unique design. I would encourage people to make the design of their ring a priority. Get something that you like– after all, you’re going to wear it for a long time. The vast majority of couples these days don’t have matching wedding bands; instead, they each go for the style, material and design they most prefer.

A design can be commissioned from a manufacturing jeweller based in a retail store, or by an independent designer/jeweler. Whoever you choose to create your ring/s, make sure you have total confidence in the jeweller’s intergrity and skill. And be certain that they understand precisely what you want. Having a ring made can be a big investment, so if you aren’t totally comfortable with a jeweller, ask more questions or choose someone else.

A couple I know wish they had chosen someone else after they commissioned a jeweler to make their rings while living in Singapore. The jeweler they selected offered very little advice and input into the process, so they were left unaware of key issues that should have been considered.

They ended up negotiating with the jeweller to have their wedding rings melted and totally remade, which of course is not a situation you’d want to find yourself in.

Do You Have Men’s Wedding Rings in Your Jewelry Box?

Do you want to turn your jewelry collection into a full-time or part-time business?.  You could set up an online store or go the tradeshow route.  Examples may include period jewelry, costume jewelry, fashion jewelry, vintage jewelry, earrings, men’s wedding rings, necklaces, bracelets, silver jewelry, rings, gold jewelry, tiaras, and estate jewelry.

If you choose to explore the option of an online jewelry store with your  jewelry collection, you should be able to tell a story about each jewelry piece.  The history of your jewelry should create a bird’s eye view into your family’s history and culture.  Beauty, romance and intrigue play important roles in the story of your jewelry.  Antique pieces attract the most sentimental and scientific buyers.  Let your buyers know that wearing a piece of jewelry from a historical era is a way of respecting the past and bringing original flavor the present.

For the sake of example, let’s assume that you look into your jewelry collection and you decide you want to sell your collection of men’s wedding rings online.  People who learn to sell men’s wedding rings online understand how to market creatively.  Or you may decide that you want to sell men’s wedding rings at a craft show or jewelry tradeshow.   Before your venture into the world of the online jewelry business it is important to identify the following key facets.  First, identify your jewelry and set aside what you want to keep and what you want to sell.   Second, does the jewelry you plan to sell hold sentimental value?  Third, be prepared to tell a story about your jewelry pieces.  Lastly, seek advice from your family and friends who have ventured into the business or hobby of selling jewelry.

But don’t feel obligated to sell every piece in your jewelry collection.  You may have several sentimental pieces that you would never part with.   There isn’t a person on the earth that isn’t sentimental about something or other.  But don’t let that keep you from selling those pieces that don’t have a hold on you.  An easy way to let go of some of your unwanted jewelry pieces is to figure out what pieces you do enjoy.  Once you have selected the jewelry you simply will not part with, have a plan to buy more of those styles of jewelry with the sale proceeds of the jewelry you just sold.  Don’t worry, if you do it right, there will be plenty of money left over to put in the bank.

Do Wedding Rings Have To Be Boring Bands?

Wedding rings are traditionally exchanged between a man and a woman when they get married, and in general are simple bands of precious metal. The metal itself was usually yellow gold until recent years, when fashions changed somewhat, and many people now opt for white gold or platinum rings instead. The white colors give a more contemporary look to this type of jewelry; and to cater for younger or perhaps cash-strapped couples, there are also much more affordable wedding rings on the market now, made from sterling silver or titanium.

Although tradition has been to have a plain – boring even – metal wedding band, there is no rulebook dictating what specifications you have to adhere to. People are generally, and rightly, suiting themselves and opting for wedding rings that have beautiful and creative designs; rings that display their status as married couples, but also are wonderfully eye-catching and a pleasure to wear.

All this does not mean the plain gold wedding ring has had its day. There are many couples, both young and old, who still wish to stick with tradition and may be fairly conservative. However, for such a longlasting commitment, it pays to know that there is a huge range of possibilities now, so that you can investigate them all and find that absolutely perfect ring.

Some of the options available include wedding rings with engraved designs, or with solitaire gemstones set into them; and there are grooved rings made from a mix of different metals, to produce a ring with a central stripe, or perhaps a silver edged black ring. There are even ring sets which contain an engagement ring and a coordinated wedding ring, which is a great idea for the ladies, since both these rings will be worn together after the wedding ceremony; it would be a shame if the two rings did not match very well, or even worse if the metals were not matched, as one could cause damage to the other as they rub together.

So it pays dividends to think ahead when shopping for wedding rings, even to the point of considering them when you look for that first step to wedded bliss, the engagement ring.
